The spotted drum is a small, laterally compressed fish with a distinctive pattern of white stripes and spots on dark brown or black skin. It inhabits rocky reefs and coral heads, typically in deeper areas from 5 to 40 metres, and is most active at dusk and during night hours. Divers often encounter juveniles hiding among coral branches or in crevices, where they remain motionless during the day. The species produces audible grunting sounds—hence its family name, Sciaenidae—which it uses to communicate with other drums.
