The Potato Cod is a large grouper with a stocky build and pale body covered in dark blotches and spots that resemble potato skin—hence its memorable common name. Found on coral and rocky reefs across Indo-Pacific waters, these fish are solitary and territorial, often stationed near crevices or overhangs where they can retreat quickly. Divers may encounter them at moderate depths, though they remain somewhat elusive; approach slowly and keep distance to avoid spooking them.
