The Goliath Grouper is a massive, heavy-bodied fish that can exceed 2 metres in length, making it one of the largest groupers in the Atlantic. Uniformly brown or grey-bronze in colour, it inhabits rocky reefs, wreck structures, and cave systems at depths between 5 and 60 metres. These solitary ambush predators are cryptic and sedentary, often occupying the same shelter for years. Encounters are rare in most regions due to historical overfishing, though populations in some areas have begun to recover.
