The reef manta ray is a broad, graceful filter-feeder that glides through tropical and subtropical waters, typically found at depths between 5 and 80 metres. It grows to around 5 metres across and is instantly recognisable by its enormous wing-like pectoral fins, white or pale belly, and two head flaps that funnel plankton into its mouth. Reef mantas are gentle and curious, often approaching divers; they gather in impressive numbers at cleaning stations and during plankton blooms. The species is listed as vulnerable to overfishing and bycatch, making encounters increasingly precious.
