The great barracuda is a sleek, silver predator with a distinctly elongated body and a large mouth filled with razor-sharp teeth. Growing to around 2 m, it patrols reef edges and open water throughout tropical and subtropical regions. Divers typically spot them hovering motionless in mid-water, watching passing fish with an almost eerie stillness before accelerating with explosive speed to strike. Their reputation as fearsome hunters is well earned—they are one of the ocean's most efficient ambush predators.
