The coral grouper is a stocky, deep-bodied fish with a distinctive brick-red to orange-red head and body, peppered with small blue spots and lines. Found among coral heads and rocky outcrops in Indo-Pacific reefs, it typically hunts small fish and crustaceans from within crevices, darting out to ambush passing prey. These groupers are solitary or in pairs, and their bold colouration makes them easy to spot on shallow reef dives.
