The desjardins sailfin tang displays the family's characteristic compressed body and sharp dorsal spines, with a colour palette ranging from yellow to olive-brown and distinctive vertical barring across the head and body. Like other members of Acanthuridae, it grazes on algae and detritus on reef slopes and drop-offs, typically at depths between 5 and 40 metres. This tang is territorial and often solitary, though it may form loose aggregations in areas with abundant food. It grows to around 25 cm.
