Yellowtail fusiliers form tight, silvery schools in clear waters above coral reefs and rocky outcrops, typically between 10 and 40 metres. Their streamlined bodies and forked tails are built for speed, and they dash into open water to snatch small fish and crustaceans before darting back to the shelter of the reef. Schools can number in the hundreds, creating a shimmering curtain that swells and contracts with synchronized turns—one of the reef's most hypnotic sights.
