The tiger shark is a large, solitary predator easily recognised by vertical stripes on its body (especially prominent in juveniles) and a blunt snout. Growing to around 7.5 m, it inhabits tropical and warm temperate waters worldwide, typically near the surface or deeper reef slopes. This species is an opportunistic hunter with a remarkably varied diet—fish, crustaceans, sea turtles, and marine mammals all feature—and it will scavenge readily. Tiger sharks are viviparous, bearing live young. The species is classified as near threatened.
