Rhinobatos rhinobatos

Rank
Species
Family

Rhinopristiformes

The shovelnose guitarfish is a flattened ray-like creature that grows to around 1.5 m long, with an elongated snout and a body that tapers gradually toward the tail. It inhabits sandy and muddy bottoms from the shallows to depths around 80 m, mostly in Mediterranean and eastern Atlantic waters. The flattened profile and distinctive shovel-shaped snout make it unmistakable, though it is often confused with rays. It hunts small fish and crustaceans by gliding along the seafloor.
