The Queensland grouper is a massive reef predator that can exceed 2 metres in length and weigh several hundred kilograms, making it one of the largest groupers on Indo-Pacific coral reefs. Solitary and cryptic, it typically hunts from rocky crevices or caves at depths between 5 and 60 metres, ambushing passing fish and crustaceans with a sudden lunge. Divers are most likely to spot one in deeper reef channels or around steep drop-offs, though encounters remain memorable — these groupers command the reef through sheer size and presence rather than aggression.
