The Pacific trumpetfish is a master of ambush, lurking among corals and rocks on Indo-Pacific reefs at depths between 5 and 40 metres. Its elongated snout and slender body — growing to around 80 cm — are perfectly adapted for stalking small fish and crustaceans; the fish holds near shelter, then darts forward with explosive speed when prey ventures close. Colour varies from yellow to brown or grey, often matching its surroundings. Watch for the characteristic tube-like mouth, which widens suddenly as the trumpetfish inhales its meal.
