The Moorish Idol is unmistakable: a laterally flattened disc of black and white stripes with bright yellow markings, a tubular snout, and an elongated dorsal fin that streams behind like a banner. Found on coral reefs across the Indo-Pacific, usually between 5 and 60 metres, it feeds on small invertebrates, sponges, and algae. Moorish Idols often move in pairs or small groups, and their striking pattern persists even in dim reef light—a reliable sign that the coral head ahead deserves a closer look.
