Jackknife Fish

The jackknife fish is instantly recognisable by its steeply angled body and dark vertical stripes—it looks as though the front half has been folded sharply downward. Found in reef environments and rocky outcrops across the western Atlantic, it typically hovers near shelter in small groups or pairs. Nocturnal hunters, they emerge at dusk to feed on small crustaceans and fish, their unusual posture helping them slip between crevices where prey hide.
