The European parrotfish is a robust labrid that grows to around 50 cm, recognisable by its deep body and prominent teeth fused into a beak-like structure. Found across the Mediterranean and northeastern Atlantic, it inhabits rocky and coral-rich reefs from shallow waters down to at least 60 metres. Named for its beak, the species uses its teeth to scrape algae and encrusting organisms from hard substrates, producing distinctive grazing marks on rocks and coral heads. Divers often spot them singly or in small groups, working methodically across the seafloor.
