The European flounder is a flatfish common in shallow coastal waters and estuaries throughout much of northern Europe. Both eyes sit on the right side of its body, and the left (blind) side is typically pale. Adults grow to around 60 cm and inhabit sandy or muddy bottoms from the surface down to 100 m or more, though most dives encounter them in shallower bays and river mouths. Flounders are ambush predators that lie buried in sediment, waiting for small fish and crustaceans to pass overhead before striking with sudden speed.
