The dusky shark is a large, streamlined predator with a distinctly pointed snout and dark grey-brown colouring. These sharks favour deep waters from the continental shelf down to 400 metres or more, though they occasionally appear in shallower coastal zones. They are slow-growing, long-lived animals that give birth to live young after lengthy pregnancies. Encounters are rare on recreational dives, but when present, their cautious behaviour typically keeps them at a distance.
