The dogtooth tuna is a streamlined, silver-blue predator that roams open water and reef drop-offs, typically patrolling depths between 10 and 100 metres. Built for speed and power, it hunts smaller fish and squid with explosive bursts, and is often spotted singly or in loose groups near current-swept channels. The prominent teeth visible when its mouth closes give it its common name—a useful field mark when glimpsing this fast-moving hunter at a distance.
