The bigfin reef squid is a slender, fast-moving cephalopod found in shallow tropical and subtropical waters across the Indo-Pacific. It reaches roughly 30 cm in length and is recognisable by its elongated body, large eye-catching fins that run the full length of its mantle, and rapid colour-changing displays—whites, reds, browns, and iridescent patterns flash across its skin as it hunts or communicates with others. Often seen in small groups hovering near reefs in daylight, it feeds on small fish and crustaceans and is notably social for a squid, displaying complex signalling behaviour between individuals.
