Angelshark

The angelshark is a flattened, ray-like predator that grows to around 2.4 metres and hunts by lying motionless on the seabed, waiting to ambush passing fish and crustaceans. Its broad pectoral fins and disc-shaped body are unmistakable, along with a pair of barbels (whisker-like sensory organs) near the mouth. Once common across European coasts and the Mediterranean, the angelshark is now critically endangered due to bycatch in trawl fisheries; encounters with divers are rare.
