El tiburón toro es un depredador robusto de color pardo grisáceo que alcanza unos 3,3 m y se encuentra con mayor frecuencia en aguas costeras, arrecifes rocosos y hábitats de fondo arenoso. Tiene un hocico puntiagudo característico, prominentes hendiduras branquiales y dientes desiguales y salientes que le dan un aspecto temible pese a su naturaleza generalmente dócil hacia los buceadores. Los tiburones toro son cazadores de movimiento lento que a menudo descansan en el lecho marino o se ciernen inmóviles en cuevas y repisas durante el día, volviéndose más activos al anochecer. La especie está en peligro crítico y ha declinado marcadamente debido a la presión pesquera y a su reproducción lenta.
