The yellowmargin moray is a robust eel with a dark body outlined by bright yellow edges along the gill opening and jaw margins—a feature that makes it instantly recognisable. It inhabits coral reef environments and rocky crevices from shallow waters down to around 60 metres. These eels are nocturnal hunters, ambushing small fish and crustaceans from shelter; divers spotting one during the day should look for the characteristic gape of the mouth, which serves both feeding and respiration rather than aggression.
