The wolf eel is a long, serpentine fish that grows to around 2.4 m, with a blunt head, strong jaws, and a dark body often marked with lighter spots or bands. Found in rocky crevices and caves along the Pacific coast, from shallow reefs down to 80 m or deeper, it is a solitary bottom-dweller that hunts crustaceans and molluscs. Despite its fearsome appearance and powerful teeth, the wolf eel is docile toward divers and pairs bond for life, with both parents guarding their eggs.
