The Western Blue Devil Fish is a compact, dark-bodied fish found in southern Australian waters, typically at depths of 5–40 metres around rocky reefs and kelp forests. It is easily recognised by its deep blue or dark purple colouring and stocky build. This territorial species tends to stay close to shelter and can be surprisingly aggressive toward intruders, making it an engaging subject for patient observers on shallow reefs.
