Found in shallow to moderate depths among reefs, seagrass beds, and rocky outcrops from Florida to Brazil, it hunts by drifting close to coral heads or vegetation before striking with sudden acceleration. Despite its delicate appearance, this ambush hunter is an efficient stalker of small fish and crustaceans, often positioning itself at an angle to rocks or larger fish to remain unnoticed.
