Tope Shark

Galeorhinus galeus

Rank
Species

The tope shark is a slender, grey-brown predator found in temperate and subtropical waters worldwide, typically at depths between 20 and 600 metres. Growing to around 1.6 metres, it is an active hunter of fish and squid, often encountered in small schools on continental shelves and slopes. Topes are viviparous, bearing live young after a long gestation, and are slow to mature—traits that make populations vulnerable to overfishing.
