The toadstool grouper is a robust, stocky fish found on deep coral and rocky reefs, typically below 100 metres. Its common name derives from its chunky, toad-like body shape and warty skin texture. Little publicised in recreational diving literature, this deep-dwelling grouper is encountered mainly by technical divers exploring the lower reef. It feeds on small fish and crustaceans in the twilight zones where it lives.
