The tiger grouper is a robust, solitary predator found on rocky reefs and around shipwrecks in tropical and subtropical waters. Recognisable by its stocky build and mottled brown to grey colouration, it hunts by ambush—lying in wait near shelter before striking at passing fish with sudden acceleration. Divers often encounter it in deeper reef zones, where it favours crevices and overhangs.
