The striped-leg hermit crab lives among coral rubble and sandy bottoms in shallow tropical waters, instantly recognisable by the bold stripes that pattern its legs and claws. Small and sociable, these crabs are often seen in loose groups, constantly rearranging shells as they grow or seek shelter. Divers spotting them scuttling across the reef floor may notice they're surprisingly bold—quick to investigate movement but equally quick to retreat into their adopted shells when alarmed.
