Spurdog

The spurdog is a small, slender shark with a characteristic spine in front of each dorsal fin—a defensive feature that gives the species its name. These deep-water hunters typically inhabit continental shelves and slopes at 200–900 m, though they sometimes venture into shallower coastal waters. Spurdogs are ovoviviparous and notably long-lived, with females gestating pups for up to two years, one of the longest pregnancies among sharks. They feed on small fish and squid and are found in temperate and cool oceans worldwide.
