Spotted Eagle Ray

The Spotted Eagle Ray is a graceful, flattened ray with distinctive white spots scattered across its dark upper surface. It cruises open water and sandy bottoms, often alone or in small groups, using wing-like pectoral fins to propel itself with an almost bird-like motion. Divers typically encounter them at moderate depths where they hunt for molluscs and crustaceans by excavating the seafloor with their long snout. Watch for the venomous spine on the tail—impressive to observe from a respectful distance.
