Spotted Black Grouper

Epinephelus daemelii

Rank
Species

The Spotted Black Grouper is a robust, dark-coloured grouper found in Indo-Pacific reefs and rocky habitats, typically at depths between 20 and 60 metres. Adults are predominantly blackish with scattered pale spots across the body and fins, making them distinctive against shadowed reef walls and crevices where they hunt. Like other large groupers, they are ambush predators that remain motionless before striking at passing fish and crustaceans with sudden speed.
