The splendid toadfish is a small, colourful resident of coral reefs and rocky outcrops in the western Atlantic. Its stocky body, wide mouth, and elaborate fin patterns make it unmistakable once spotted, though it spends much of its time hidden in crevices or under ledges. Males are territorial and vocal, producing distinctive grunting calls, especially at dusk—a memorable soundtrack for night dives in shallow reef zones.
