Spiny Starfish

Marthasterias glacialis

Rank
Species

The Spiny Starfish is a robust predator found across rocky reefs and kelp forests from the low intertidal zone to depths around 80 m. Its five thick arms are covered in prominent spines and tubercles, giving it a distinctly bumpy texture, and it can reach up to 30 cm across. A voracious feeder, it pries open bivalves and consumes other echinoderms; watch for it moving slowly across the seabed at night when it is most active.
