The spinecheek anemonefish is a stocky, orange-and-white clownfish with a distinctive pair of spines on each cheek—the feature that sets it apart from its relatives. Found in shallow coral reef environments across the Indo-Pacific, it forms tight associations with large host anemones, rarely venturing far from its shelter. Like other anemonefish, it gains protection from the anemone's tentacles while helping to keep the host clean; juveniles establish residence in small anemones before moving to larger ones as they grow.
