Spider Crab

Hyas araneus

Rank
Species

The spider crab is a long-legged crustacean instantly recognisable by its spindly legs and compact body, earning its common name immediately. Found on rocky and mixed substrates from the shallows to depths beyond typical recreational diving, it moves deliberately across the seabed using those elongated limbs to navigate uneven terrain. Spider crabs are detritivores and scavengers, often encountered partially buried or wedged into crevices during the day, and they sometimes decorate their carapace with bits of debris as camouflage.
