This snapper inhabits coral reef environments across Indo-Pacific waters, typically found at depths between 5 and 40 metres. Macolor macularis is a member of the Lutjanidae family, characterised by the distinctive cheek markings that give it its common name. Like other reef snappers, it forms loose aggregations during the day and becomes more active at dusk, feeding on small fish and crustaceans. It prefers areas with good coral cover and rocky outcrops where it can shelter during daylight hours.
