The spangled emperor is a robust reef fish reaching up to 87 cm, recognisable by its silvery body marked with blue lines radiating from the eye and scattered blue spots across the head and gill covers. These solitary or small-group feeders hunt across sandy and rubble areas adjacent to coral, probing the substrate for invertebrates and small fish. They are found in Indo-Pacific waters at depths from a few metres down to around 60 m, though deeper populations exist. Divers often spot them early morning or late afternoon when feeding activity peaks.
