Smooth Hammerhead

The smooth hammerhead is instantly recognisable by its flattened, hammer-shaped head — narrower and more blade-like than its relatives. These sharks patrol open water and coastal zones worldwide, typically between 5 and 30 metres, though they can dive deeper. They hunt schooling fish and squid with the help of electroreceptive organs spread across that distinctive rostrum, which acts almost like a metal detector for prey buried in sand. Females give birth to live young, sometimes in large litters.
