Smalleye Stingray

The smalleye stingray is a deep-water ray with a flattened, diamond-shaped disc and a venomous tail spine typical of stingrays. It inhabits continental slopes and abyssal plains, rarely encountered by recreational divers. The species is named for its unusually small eyes, an adaptation to the perpetual darkness of the deep sea where it hunts small fish and crustaceans across the seafloor.
