Short-Spined Sea Scorpion

The short-spined sea scorpion is a stocky, well-camouaged bottom-dweller found in cold northern waters from the shallows down to around 100 metres. Recognise it by its broad, flattened head, venomous spines along the dorsal fin and gill covers, and mottled brown or grey colouration that blends seamlessly with rocky or sandy substrate. Despite its fearsome name and armament, it is sluggish and docile, relying on ambush rather than pursuit to feed on small fish and crustaceans. Handle with care: the spines are venomous and can inflict a painful wound.
