Short-finned pilot whales are robust cetaceans with rounded heads and stocky bodies, typically found in deep offshore waters of tropical and subtropical seas. They hunt squid and fish in tight social groups, often diving to several hundred metres. Divers in warm waters may encounter them from surface observation rather than underwater, though their distinctive rounded melon and dark colouration make them unmistakable when they do appear.
