Sevengill Shark

Notorynchus cepedianus

Rank
Species

The sevengill shark is a large, blunt-headed predator that inhabits deep and temperate waters worldwide, typically found below 200 metres but occasionally venturing into shallower bays. It is distinguished by seven gill slits (most sharks have five) and a single dorsal fin set far back on its body. Despite its size and predatory nature, it is generally sluggish and poses little threat to divers, though its presence in deep water means encounters are rare.
