Schoolmasters are medium-sized snappers found in coastal waters from the western Atlantic to the Caribbean, favouring reef edges and mangrove channels. Recognisable by their silvery body, yellow-tinged fins, and a dark stripe running through the eye, they often form loose schools in shallow to moderate depths. These fish are opportunistic feeders, hunting small fish and crustaceans, and will tolerate slightly brackish conditions in estuaries and lagoons.
