The sand mullet is a streamlined fish reaching around 40 cm, found in coastal and estuarine waters where it feeds on algae and detritus from sandy bottoms. It has a silvery body with a darker back and is often seen in small schools in shallow, turbid conditions where other mullet species congregate. Look for them moving deliberately along the seabed or near the surface in sheltered bays and river mouths.
