Sally Lightfoot Crab

Grapsus grapsus

Rank
Species

The Sally Lightfoot Crab is a striking red or orange crustacean found on rocky coasts and shallow reef margins throughout tropical and subtropical waters. Named for its remarkable agility, this crab moves with surprising speed across wet rocks and surge zones, leaping between boulders and feeding on algae, detritus, and small organisms. Its flattened body and powerful legs make it ideally suited to life in the splash zone, where it darts away from predators with characteristic quick, sideways bursts.
