The rock beauty is a striking angelfish with a deep yellow head and front half contrasting sharply with a dark blue-black rear body and fins. Found on coral and rocky reefs across the tropical western Atlantic, usually at 5–60 metres, it feeds on sponges and tunicates. Often seen singly or in pairs, this pomacanthid is territorial and moves deliberately through crevices and overhangs while foraging.
