Rhinopias

Rhinopias frondosa

Rank
Species

Rhinopias are masterfully camouflaged scorpionfish found on Indo-Pacific reefs, typically at depths of 20–60 metres. Their flamboyant fronds and leaf-like appendages blend seamlessly with coral rubble and sponge gardens. These ambush predators remain motionless for long periods, then strike with lightning speed at passing prey. Spotting one requires a slow, careful eye—but once found, their intricate patterns and elaborate ornamentation reward close observation.
