Red Moki

Cheilodactylus spectabilis

Rank
Species

The red moki is a striking snapper-like fish found in cooler southern waters, recognisable by its deep red body and the characteristic fleshy lobes on its gill covers. It favours rocky reefs and kelp forests at moderate depths, where it hunts small fish and crustaceans among crevices. Red moki are solitary or found in loose aggregations; their bold colouring and stocky build make them memorable inhabitants of temperate reefs.
