The pygmy cuttlefish is a diminutive cephalopod found in shallow Indo-Pacific waters, typically hovering just above the seabed in sandy or silty habitats. Despite its tiny size, it displays the full repertoire of cuttlefish behaviour: rapid colour and texture changes for camouflage, hunting small crustaceans and fish larvae with lightning-fast arm strikes, and elaborate colour displays during mating. Divers exploring sheltered bays and reef flats at depths of 5–20 metres may spot one resting motionless on the bottom, where its cryptic appearance makes it easy to miss until it suddenly shifts colour.
